# Who invented xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. ## Why the legends persist

Because the board carries the inscription 楚河漢界, "Chu river, Han border", which refers to the boundary between the kingdoms of Chu and Han. That is a genuine historical reference, but it dates the *decoration*, not the game — the inscription was applied to a board that already existed.

## How games actually develop

By accretion. Rules change regionally, some variants spread, others die, and after a few centuries something stabilises. That process leaves no inventor to name, which is unsatisfying and also what the evidence shows for every major board game including chess.
