In chess, open lines mean attack and blocking stops it. With a cannon, an **empty line carries no attack at all**, and interposing a piece can *create* the threat you were trying to prevent. Every reflex fires in the wrong direction. ## The two errors, over and over - **Counting an attack that is not there.** A cannon aimed down an empty file at your chariot is not attacking it. - **Blocking into a threat.** Interposing on an empty line hands the cannon its screen, and your blocking piece is the target. Both go away, but only after they have cost a few games. ## The habit that fixes it Count pieces on the line, every time, before deciding whether a cannon is doing anything.
