Can advisors leave the palace in xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

Direct answer

No. Advisors move one point diagonally and never leave the palace, which means each advisor can only ever reach five points — the four corners and the centre. They are the least mobile pieces in the game and exist solely to defend the general.

The five points

From a corner, an advisor can only go to the centre. From the centre, it can go to any of the four corners. It can never reach the edge midpoints of the palace, which is why an advisor on the centre point is doing a different job from one in a corner.

Why they decide endgames

An advisor fills a palace point, which removes a mating square and gives the general something to shelter behind. Most cannon mates need a particular palace point to be empty.

The rule of thumb that follows: a defender with both advisors holds many endgames that a defender with one loses outright. That is why strong players will give up a soldier to remove one.

Related questions

Can an advisor block a check?

Only within the palace and only on a diagonal step — which is often exactly enough, since checks usually come into the palace.

Can advisors hurt their own side?

Yes. Sitting on the wrong point, an advisor removes the general's escape square. That is precisely how the double cannon mate works.
