How does the advisor move in xiangqi?

Every position, move and legality claim on this page is verified programmatically against our open rules engine, which implements the WXF laws and is tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook.

Direct answer

The advisor moves exactly one point diagonally and may never leave the palace — the nine-point square marked with a cross in front of each general. That confines it to five points: the four corners of the palace and its centre. Each side has two, and they exist solely to shield the general.

Five points, and no more

The palace is the three-by-three area at each end of the central files, marked by the diagonal cross. An advisor inside it can only sit on five of those nine points, because it moves diagonally: the four corners and the centre.

The advisor below is on the palace centre e1, its most useful point, from which it can reach all four corners.

Click the advisor: four points, all inside the palace.

An advisor on the palace centre reaches all four corners. From a corner it can only return to the centre.

Why two small pieces decide endgames

Advisors look negligible and are not. Their value is entirely defensive and entirely concrete:

  • They block the palace diagonals, which is what stops a chariot or cannon delivering mate from the side.
  • A general with no advisors is exposed to a whole family of standard mating patterns — most of them involving a cannon firing down the central file with the general's own pieces as the screen.
  • In the endgame, whether the defender has both advisors is very often the whole question. Many endings are a straightforward win against a general with no advisors and a dead draw against one with two.

Common mistakes

Pushing an advisor forward for activity

It has nowhere to go — the palace is the whole world for an advisor. Moving one is only ever about which defensive point it occupies.

Trading both advisors to simplify

Simplification usually favours the defender, but not this trade. Losing both advisors converts many drawn endings into losses.

Related questions

Can the advisor leave the palace?

No. The advisor and the general are both confined to the nine-point palace for the entire game. Only the elephant shares a comparable restriction, and its boundary is the river rather than the palace.

How many points can an advisor reach?

Five in total: the palace centre and its four corners. From the centre it has four moves; from any corner it has exactly one, back to the centre.
