Xiangqi vs chess: what actually differs

Direct answer
Xiangqi and western chess descend from the same Indian ancestor but diverged around a thousand years ago. Xiangqi is played on the intersections of a 9×10 grid rather than in 64 squares; it has a cannon that captures by jumping, a general locked inside a palace, elephants that cannot cross the river, and no promotion at all. Stalemate is a loss rather than a draw, and repetition is not automatically drawn.

The two games are often introduced as though xiangqi were “chess with different pieces”. It is closer to the truth to say they are cousins: the shared ancestry shows in the chariot, which is a rook in all but name, and almost nowhere else.
The cannon has no equivalent
The cannon (炮) moves exactly like a chariot — any distance along a rank or file — but it can only capture by jumping over exactly one intervening piece, called the screen (炮架). No more, no fewer.
This single rule reshapes the whole game. A piece that shields your general from a chariot is simultaneously the platform a cannon needs to shoot it. Defending against the two pieces pulls in opposite directions, and material that would be dead weight in chess becomes load-bearing.
It also makes the empty board dangerous rather than safe: as pieces come off, cannons lose their screens and quietly stop working, which is why xiangqi endgames evaluate so differently from chess ones.
The general never leaves home
In chess the king walks to the centre in the endgame and becomes a fighting piece. In xiangqi the general is confined to nine points for the entire game, and the two advisors that guard it are confined to five.
Two consequences follow. Attacks are aimed at a target that cannot run, so mating nets are geometric and repeatable rather than a chase. And stripping the advisors and elephants is a real plan in itself — a general with no defenders can be mated by material that would be harmless against an intact palace.
The flying general rule compounds it: the two generals may never face each other down an open file, which turns the general into a long-range attacking piece even though it cannot move more than one point.
Xiangqi is much harder to draw
Three rules push against the draw, and together they are why xiangqi at a high level is decisive far more often than chess.
- Stalemate loses. Leaving your opponent with no legal move wins the game, so the defender cannot use it as an escape.
- No promotion. A soldier that reaches the far rank is still a soldier. Being a piece down stays being a piece down.
- Repetition is adjudicated. Perpetual check (长将) and perpetual chase (长捉) do not draw — the player repeating must vary, and loses if they refuse.
That last rule is the one almost every non-Chinese description of xiangqi gets wrong, and the one most software still implements as “threefold repetition is a draw”. It is not, and it decides real games.
Which game is harder?
Neither, in any way that survives contact with the question. The state spaces are comparable, both have deep opening theory, and a strong player of either needs years.
What differs is where the difficulty sits. Chess rewards long positional plans and endgame technique built on promotion. Xiangqi rewards concrete calculation earlier, because the cannon and the blockable horse make positions sharper sooner, and because the drawing resources chess players lean on are simply absent.
If you already play chess, the fastest way in is to accept that your evaluation is wrong rather than translate it: a xiangqi chariot is worth roughly two cannons or two horses, advisors matter far more than they look, and an open file near the palace is worth more than a soldier.

Common mistakes
Treating the horse as a knight
It cannot jump. A piece on the orthogonal point it steps through removes two of its moves, and your own pieces block it exactly as your opponent’s do. Chess players lose material to this in their first ten games.
Trading down when ahead
Simplifying is the chess instinct and it is often wrong here. Cannons need screens, so a board with fewer pieces is a board where your cannon has stopped working. Check what each trade does to your cannons before making it.
Expecting stalemate to save a lost position
It loses. A player with no legal move loses the game outright, so the defensive resource simply does not exist.
Assuming a repetition is a draw
