How does the chariot move in xiangqi?

Direct answer
The chariot moves any number of empty points along a rank or file and captures the first enemy piece it meets. It cannot jump. This is identical to the rook in western chess, and it makes the chariot the strongest piece in xiangqi — worth roughly two horses or two cannons, and decisive in almost every endgame.
The move
There is no special rule here, which is itself worth knowing: of the seven xiangqi pieces the chariot is the only one with no restriction whatsoever. It is not blocked like a horse, it needs no screen like a cannon, it is not confined like an elephant, an advisor or the general, and it does not lose power like a soldier that has not crossed.

What a chariot is worth
A widely used rough scale, taking the soldier before it crosses the river as 1:

Treat these as a starting point rather than a law. The cannon is worth more than the horse early and less late; a soldier that has crossed the river and reached the enemy palace can be worth more than a horse.
Common mistakes
Leaving the chariot at home
The commonest cause of a lost xiangqi game at club level is one chariot that never entered play. If yours is still on its starting point at move fifteen, you are effectively a piece down.
Trading a chariot for a horse and a soldier
By value that looks close. In practice the chariot's mobility usually wins out, especially with the board emptying. Be sceptical of any trade that hands the opponent the only chariot.
