How does the soldier move in xiangqi?
Every position, move and legality claim on this page is verified programmatically against our open rules engine, which implements the WXF laws and is tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook.
Direct answer
A soldier moves one point straight forward. Once it has crossed the river it may also move one point sideways, but it can never move backwards and never promotes. It captures exactly as it moves. A soldier that has crossed is worth roughly twice one that has not, and deep in the enemy palace it can be worth more than a horse.
Before the river, and after
The river across the middle of the board changes what a soldier is. Before it crosses, a soldier has exactly one move: forward. After crossing, it has three: forward, left and right.
Two red soldiers below. The one on e6 has crossed and can go three ways; the one on e3 has not and can only advance. Click each in turn.
Click the soldier on e6, then the one on e3, and compare.
Xiangqi position. Red: soldier e6, soldier e3, general e0. Black: general d9. Red to move.
There is no way back, and no promotion
A xiangqi soldier never retreats and never becomes anything else. Both facts matter more than they sound:
- Every soldier move is permanent. Advancing one is a commitment; a soldier pushed to a bad point stays there.
- There is no queening. Racing a soldier to the last rank achieves nothing by itself — in fact a soldier on the enemy back rank is nearly useless, because it can only move sideways. The strong points are inside and around the enemy palace.
- Five soldiers, and they thin out. Soldiers are traded off early far more often than chess pawns, and endgames frequently hinge on one surviving crossed soldier.
Common mistakes
Pushing soldiers to the last rank
There is no promotion, and a soldier on the final rank has lost its forward move for good. Aim for the points beside and in front of the enemy palace instead.
Expecting a pawn structure
Soldiers do not capture diagonally, so they do not defend each other the way chess pawns do. Chains and structures in the chess sense simply do not exist here.
Advancing soldiers early to gain space
Each advance opens lines toward your own camp and removes a blocker your horses may need. Soldier moves in the opening are usually made to free a horse, not to gain space.
Related questions
Do xiangqi soldiers promote?
No. A soldier remains a soldier for the whole game. Reaching the far end of the board grants nothing — it merely costs the soldier its forward move.
Can a soldier move sideways?
Only after it has crossed the river, and only one point at a time. Before crossing it can move straight forward and nothing else.
Can a soldier move backwards?
Never, on either side of the river.
