What the Chinese chess game is
Chinese chess is the usual English name for xiangqi (象棋), a two-player strategy game of the same family as western chess and shogi. It is among the most played board games in the world, and it is not a chess variant: it has its own board, its own pieces and its own winning conditions.
Each side has sixteen pieces — a general, two advisors, two elephants, two horses, two chariots, two cannons and five soldiers — and Red moves first.
What carries over from western chess
More than you would guess. If you play chess, these instincts are worth keeping:
- Develop before you attack. Chariots are your rooks and they want open files just as badly.
- The centre matters — the central file especially, because that is where the cannons point.
- Tempo is real. A move that develops while making a threat is worth two that do not.
What does not carry over
Four differences catch every chess player in their first game:
- Stalemate is a loss, not a draw. Leaving your opponent with no legal move wins the game.
- The generals may never face each other down an open file with nothing between them — the flying general rule, and it is a live tactical weapon, not a footnote.
- The cannon captures by jumping. It needs exactly one piece between it and its target, which means a piece can be defended by removing a defender.
- Perpetual check and chase are forbidden. You cannot save a lost game by checking forever; the side that will not stop loses. See the chase rules.
