Privacy
This site measures how it is used with its own analytics, on its own server. Nothing about your visit is sold, shared with advertisers, or sent to a data broker. Here is exactly what is recorded and how to opt out.
What is recorded
For every page you read: the page, the page you came from, the time you spent, how far down you scrolled, where you clicked, and your country (worked out from your browser's timezone — no location lookup is made). If something on the page breaks, the error is recorded so it can be fixed. On the app, the features you use and whether they worked are recorded too, so a feature that fails can be found and repaired.
Your IP address is not stored. A one-way hash of it is kept for a while, which lets us tell that two visits came from the same network without knowing which network.
The one cookie
To tell one visit from another we set a single first-party cookie, xqv, holding a random id. It carries no personal information and is never shared with anyone. It is what turns a list of page views into a picture of how people actually use the site — where they arrive, where they get stuck, whether they come back.
If you are visiting from the UK or the European Economic Area you are asked before it is set. If you choose Essential only, your pages still count towards the site's totals, anonymously: no id, no cookie, no way to connect one page view to another.
Session recordings
With your consent, some visits are recorded — the movement of the pointer, scrolling and clicks, played back over a copy of the page — so that confusing layouts can be seen rather than guessed at. Recordings never contain anything you type: form fields are blanked before the copy of the page leaves your browser, and names, messages and email addresses are masked. Recordings are deleted automatically after 30 days.
Google Analytics
Google Analytics is also present, as a cross-check on our own figures. In the UK and EEA it is switched off until you allow analytics, using the same choice as above; advertising features are switched off everywhere.
Do Not Track
If your browser sends the Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, our analytics does not run at all — not even in aggregate.
How long it is kept
Page views and behaviour for 180 days; recordings for 30. Each day's data is deleted as a whole when it passes the limit.
Changing your choice
Your answer is remembered for 180 days in a cookie named xqc. To change it, clear it here and you will be asked again on your next page.
