Can the elephant enter the palace in xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. The chase half has not been validated against the official casebook. Why only that point

The elephant moves exactly two points diagonally and never crosses the river. From its starting points on the back rank, on the third and seventh files, its two-point diagonals reach the edge files, its river bank, and the centre file on the third rank. That centre-file point happens to be the front-middle point of the palace. The palace's other eight points are all off the elephant's pattern. The elephant page shows all seven points.

Why an elephant there is useful

The central elephant point is a strong defensive post. From it the elephant can drop back to either side, the two elephants protect each other when one stands there and the other on the back rank, and it covers points an enemy horse wants to land on. That is why the elephant opening's first move goes there.

And when it is in the way

That same point is one the general may want. With an elephant on it, a general on the palace centre cannot step forward, and the elephant blocks the centre file, which can matter against a cannon: an elephant on the centre file can serve as the screen for an enemy cannon aimed at your general.
