Can a horse get trapped in xiangqi?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.
Direct answer
Yes, and far more easily than a chess knight. Every one of a horse's eight moves passes through a blockable point, so a horse on the edge of the board with a few pieces around it can be reduced to one move or none. A trapped horse is a real way to lose material without a tactic.
Where horses get stuck
- On the edge file. Half its moves are off the board already; two blocked legs can leave it with nothing.
- Behind its own soldiers. Your own pieces block just as well as the enemy's.
- Deep in enemy territory with no retreat. A horse takes three or four moves to come home.
Trapping one on purpose
It is a genuine plan, not an accident. If an enemy horse has committed to your half, count its legs before you count anything else — if two moves are blocked and you can attack the remaining escape, you win a piece without a combination.

Is this why edge horses are bad?
Largely, yes. A horse on the outside file has fewer moves and more of them blockable.
Can a chariot be trapped?
Much more rarely — it needs only one clear line, and a clear line is usually available.
