Can two pieces occupy the same point in xiangqi?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Direct answer
No. Each of the 90 points holds at most one piece. Moving onto a point held by an enemy piece captures it and takes its place; moving onto a point held by your own piece is illegal. There is no stacking and no drop rule — captured pieces leave the game permanently.
No drops, unlike shogi
Japanese shogi lets you return captured pieces to the board as your own. Xiangqi does not: a captured piece is gone. This is why material counting works in xiangqi much as it does in chess, and why xiangqi endgames simplify rather than staying complicated.
Two pieces on one file
They can share a file, and notation has to handle it: 前 and 後 in Chinese, + and - in WXF, distinguish the front and rear piece when both are the same type on the same file.
