When resigning is the right call
Once material and position are both clearly lost and no practical tricks remain, most players resign rather than continue. Because stalemate is a loss rather than a draw, there is no equivalent of playing on for a swindle the way a desperate chess player might.
Resigning too early
The flip side: xiangqi attacks can look terminal and still have a defence, particularly if the defender still has both advisors. Resigning before checking whether the position is genuinely hopeless throws away positions that a calmer look would have saved.
