Advisors and the general share the same nine points, so their relationship cuts both ways. A well-placed advisor fills a point an attacker needs and shields the general from certain lines entirely. A badly placed one removes the general's own escape square, which is exactly how several standard mates are built.

An advisor sitting on a corner or the centre denies that point to a cannon or chariot trying to mate there, and it is often the single piece standing between a strong attack and a lost game. Two advisors together are considerably stronger than the sum of their individual coverage, because they overlap on the points that matter most.
