Trade pieces, not soldiers — every trade brings you closer to a position where your extra material decides things. Keep your own advisors, bring your general up once it is safe, and before each simplification check the material table, because some "winning" material cannot force mate at all.
The trap
Simplifying into a lone cannon against a bare general. It looks like you are winning material all the way down and it is a dead draw, because a cannon with nothing to jump cannot even give check. Know where you are heading before you start trading.
Do not stop defending
A player converting an advantage often stops watching their own palace. The general cannot run, so a counterattack with two pieces beats an extra chariot on the other wing. Count their attackers every move, even while winning.
