How do I decide which wing to attack in xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

Direct answer

Attack the side that is already short of defenders, and commit your pieces there rather than splitting them. The wing where your opponent has developed the fewest pieces is the one with the fewest defenders waiting for you, and it is usually also the side your own cannon or chariot already points toward from its starting square.

Read the opponent's development

Count developed pieces on each side of the central file. If one wing has an extra horse or a chariot already active and the other does not, the undeveloped side is where a breakthrough is easiest, because the defender simply has fewer pieces there to bring back.

Do not attack on both wings at once

Splitting attackers between two wings usually means neither attack has the two pieces it needs to succeed. Pick one side, bring the pieces that can actually reach it, and only open a second front once the first has achieved something concrete.

Related questions

What if both wings look even?

Then attack the side nearer your most active piece already, since it needs fewer moves to arrive.

Can the choice change mid-game?

Yes, if the opponent shifts defenders. Reassess the count every few moves rather than committing once and forgetting it.
