How do I spot tactics in a level-material position?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.
Direct answer
Level material tells you nothing about safety, so look anyway. Scan for pieces that are technically defended once but attacked twice, cannon screens that could be added or removed with a quiet move, and any check available, because level material very often hides a tactic that one side has simply not looked for yet.
Where tactics hide in equal positions
Overloaded defenders and cannon screens are the two most common sources, because neither shows up in a material count at all. A position can be perfectly level on paper and one move away from losing a piece through either.
Make the scan a habit, not a reaction
Do not wait for the position to "look sharp" before checking for tactics. The two-question habit, what did their last move attack and what does my move give up, works exactly the same whether material is level, ahead or behind, and it is the single biggest fix for missed tactics generally.

Does level material mean the position is safe?
No. It only means neither side has captured more, which says nothing about what is currently hanging.
What single check is most valuable here?
Counting the pieces on every cannon line. It catches the largest share of tactics that appear from a quiet, level position.
