In a team match, two squads face each other with players assigned to boards in a fixed order, typically strongest to weakest, and each board plays its own individual game. The overall match result is the sum of points across every board, so a team can win the match even if its top board loses, provided the other boards make up for it.
Why board order matters
Pairing by strength means board one generally faces the opposing team's strongest player, board two the second strongest, and so on, which keeps individual games reasonably competitive rather than wildly mismatched. Team captains usually set the board order before the match and cannot change a player's position mid-event.
Colours in team play
Colours are typically alternated across boards, so roughly half your team plays Red and half plays Black in any given round, which balances the first-move advantage across the match rather than concentrating it on one side.
