These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. What a master knows that a club player does not

• Openings as plans. A master knows why each move in their systems is played and what the typical middlegame aims are, so an unfamiliar move does not throw them.
• Endgames as technique. The basic mates and the standard wins and draws are played without thinking, which frees their time for the hard positions.
• Patterns by the thousand. Named mates, typical sacrifices and defensive setups are recognised at a glance rather than worked out.
• Accurate calculation. Not seeing further for the sake of it, but checking forcing lines without missing the opponent's best reply.

How the work actually looks

Play long games regularly, against people at or above your level. Review every loss until you can name the move that lost and the thought that led to it. Solve tactics daily, drill the fundamental endgames until they are automatic, and study annotated games in the openings you play. Being realistic

Titles and their requirements are set by each federation and differ between them, so check the rules of the body you want to play under. Whatever the title, the path to it takes years, not months. The players who get there are usually the ones who kept enjoying the study itself.
