How are xiangqi openings different from chess openings?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. The chase half has not been validated against the official casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it before publishing.
Direct answer
The biggest differences: xiangqi openings create threats from the very first move, since a cannon can attack immediately; they revolve around piece formations, horses, cannons and chariots, rather than a pawn centre; and their names usually describe the formation, like Central Cannon or Screen Horses, rather than a player or place.
Threats from move one
In chess, the first few moves rarely threaten anything. In xiangqi, cannons already have screens in the starting position, so the very first move can attack. The Central Cannon aims at Black's central soldier at once, and Black's first move usually has to take that into account. Opening play is therefore about development and defence at the same time.
Formations, not pawn structure
Chess openings are organised largely around pawn structures. Xiangqi has only five soldiers per side, moving one point at a time with no double step, so they shape the game less. Openings are organised around where the horses, cannons and chariots go: two horses beside the centre in Screen Horses, two central cannons in same- or opposite-direction cannons, a cannon on the advisor file in quieter systems.
Names and theory
Xiangqi opening names describe the pieces, sometimes poetically, as in 仙人指路, "the immortal points the way", for the Pawn Opening. Theory is extensive at the top, but beginners can play well with a few principles and one or two systems; see which game rewards memorised theory more.
What transfers from chess
The principles do: develop quickly, do not move the same piece repeatedly without reason, keep your king or general safe, and do not grab material at the cost of development. Specific chess opening knowledge does not.

Is there a xiangqi equivalent of 1.e4?
The Central Cannon plays a similar role as the most popular, direct first move, but the analogy ends there.
Do xiangqi openings end sooner?
Often, because contact between pieces begins almost immediately.
