Should I learn xiangqi or go?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.
Direct answer
They have almost nothing in common beyond being played on intersections. Xiangqi is a capture game with a single concrete objective — trap the general — and you can play a real game in fifteen minutes. Go is a territorial game whose rules are even simpler but whose early learning curve is much steeper.
Pick by what you enjoy
If you like calculation, forcing sequences and a clear target, xiangqi. If you like shape, balance and long-range influence with no single target, go. People who love one frequently find the other unsatisfying, and that is a matter of taste rather than depth.
Time to a satisfying game
Xiangqi: one evening. Go: considerably longer, because until you can read life and death, whole groups vanish for reasons that are not visible. Go on a 9×9 board shortens that substantially.
