Should I always recapture immediately after a trade in the opening, or can delaying be better?

Direct answer
Usually recapture immediately. Leaving material uncaptured for no reason is simply being a piece down, and that is rarely worth it this early in the game. The exception is when you have a genuinely bigger threat elsewhere on the board that the opponent must answer first, in which case a brief, calculated delay can gain more than the recapture would have.
Why immediate recapture is the safe default
Early in the game, with few pieces developed and few concrete threats yet in place, an uncompensated material deficit is simply a disadvantage with nothing to show for it. Delaying a recapture without a specific, calculated reason is not a clever idea, it is usually just losing a piece for free.
What actually justifies waiting
A move that creates a threat your opponent must answer immediately, one that is more urgent than recapturing your piece, can be worth playing first, provided you have actually calculated that the recapture will still be available afterward.
