What happens if a player leaves the board during a xiangqi game?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.
Direct answer
Nothing special happens immediately, the clock simply keeps running against the player who left. If they are not back before their time runs out, they lose by the ordinary time-forfeit rule, exactly as if they had spent that time thinking. There is no separate penalty for leaving as such, only for the consequence of not moving.
Why there is no distinct rule for it
Xiangqi's clock rules do not care why a player is not moving, only that they are not. A player who steps away to think somewhere else, or who simply forgets it is their turn, is treated identically by the rules, because the clock is the only thing being measured.
Extended or repeated absence
Some tournaments add their own conduct rules for a player who leaves the playing area repeatedly or for unreasonably long periods without informing the arbiter, but that is event-specific regulation layered on top of the basic clock rule, not a xiangqi law in itself.
Related questions
Can a player be forfeited for leaving even with time left?
Only under a specific event's conduct rules; the core xiangqi rules only forfeit on time running out.
Does this differ online?
Not in principle, an inactive player's clock still runs, and most platforms forfeit automatically once it expires.
