What is a xiangqi club like?

Direct answer
Informal and social. Most clubs outside Asia are attached to Chinese or Vietnamese community centres or university societies. Bring nothing — sets are always there. Expect to lose the first several games, expect unsolicited advice, and expect a warmer reception than a chess club might give a beginner.
Finding one
Search in the community's own language — 象棋 or cờ tướng plus your city — rather than "Chinese chess", which is what outsiders call it. National xiangqi federations also list affiliated clubs, and most of Europe and North America has one.
The language question
Not a barrier. Board games are famously good at getting by without shared language, and the notation is universal. Learning the seven piece characters before you go will make the first evening easier.
