Loud, fast and public. In Chinese and Vietnamese cities, xiangqi is played outdoors year-round with a crowd of onlookers offering advice, pieces slapped down hard for emphasis, and very little clock. It is a social institution more than a competitive one, and it is where most players actually learn.
The conventions
Kibitzing is normal and not considered cheating in casual play, though it is firmly banned in rated games. Slapping a piece is expression, not aggression. Games are quick, rematches immediate, and a stranger sitting down to play is usually welcome.
If you are visiting
Watch a few games before joining. Some boards play for small stakes, which is worth knowing in advance. You will not need to speak the language — the board handles that — and a newcomer learning the game is generally received warmly.
