What is the best first move in xiangqi?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.
Direct answer
炮二平五, the Central Cannon, is the most played first move in the game and the best one to learn first, because it creates an immediate threat and teaches attacking play faster than anything else. It is not objectively "best" — 相三進五 and 兵七進一 are entirely sound — but it is the one that teaches most.
Why the Central Cannon
It puts a cannon on the central file pointing at the enemy general, with only soldiers in between. Black must answer it, which means you immediately learn what an initiative is and how it is met.
The standard reply is Screen Horses (屏風馬), and that pair — attack and defence — covers most of what a beginner needs to understand about the opening.
The sound alternatives
- 相三進五 (Elephant Opening) — quiet, solid, avoids all the sharp theory.
- 兵七進一 (Pawn Opening, 仙人指路) — the most flexible move on the board, commits to nothing.
- 馬二進三 — a normal developing move, perfectly playable.
None of these is refuted. Choose by the kind of middlegame you want.

Should beginners learn openings at all?
Four or five moves and the plan behind them, no more. See choosing an opening.
Is there a bad first move?
Moving an advisor or a corner soldier wastes time, and pushing the central soldier early weakens the point in front of your own general. Nothing loses outright.
