Smothered mate (闷杀)

Every position, move and legality claim on this page is verified programmatically against our open rules engine, which implements the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. The chase half has not been validated against the official casebook.

Direct answer

闷杀 is the family of mates in which the defending general has no escape because its OWN pieces occupy the points it would use. The mating piece can be anything — a soldier, a chariot, a cannon. When it is a cannon firing through a screen, the mate has its own name, 闷宫. This page is about the rest of the family.

A single soldier can do it

The clearest demonstration that this is a family rather than one diagram: here the mate is delivered by a lone soldier, and there is exactly one move that works.

楚 河漢 界士將士兵炮帥

Red to play and mate in one.

闷杀 by a soldier. The advisors block, the flying-general rule covers the capture, and one soldier is enough.

Xiangqi position. Red: soldier d5, cannon a0, general d0. Black: advisor d8, general d7, advisor e7. Red to move.

Two rules carry this, not the soldier

A soldier is the weakest piece on the board, so it is worth being precise about what actually mates here. Two rules that are unique to xiangqi do the work:

  • The general may not leave the palace. Every escape has to be one of nine points, and the defender's own advisors are standing on two of them.
  • Two generals may not face each other down a clear file. The general would happily capture the soldier in front of it — except that the square it would land on sits on an open file with the red general at the far end, which makes the capture illegal. Red's general is doing more work in this position than Red's soldier.

That second point is the one to carry away. In xiangqi your own general is an attacking piece, and a surprising number of mates with thin material only exist because of it.

The rest of the family

Once you see the shape, the variations are just a question of who delivers:

  • Cannon — 闷宫. The canonical member, and the one with its own name, because the cannon's screen makes blocking impossible rather than merely difficult.
  • Soldier. The position above. Cheap, and common in endings where a soldier has reached the palace.
  • Chariot. The general's own men block the rank or file it would run along, and the chariot closes the last point.

The common thread is never the attacker. It is that the defender has run out of empty points, and some of them are occupied by its own pieces. That is why it is worth counting your general's legal moves in a quiet position, before anyone is checking.

Related questions

What is the difference between 闷杀 and 闷宫?

闷杀 is the family: any mate where the general's own pieces take away its escape points. 闷宫 is the specific member delivered by a cannon firing through a screen, which is canonical enough to have its own name.

Can a single soldier really checkmate in xiangqi?

Yes, with help from the rules rather than from other pieces. The position on this page is a verified mate in one: the advisors block two palace points, and the flying-general rule makes capturing the soldier illegal.

How do you avoid being smothered?

Count your general's legal moves while the position is still quiet. A general with one legal point is one forcing check from mate, however healthy the material looks, and advisors sitting beside it are part of the problem rather than the defence.
