Should both of my chariots attack, or should one stay back to defend?
These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. The chase half has not been validated against the official casebook. Direct answer
It depends on your palace's safety. Two chariots attacking together produce the most powerful threats in the game, including the two chariot mate, so when your own position is safe, bring both. When your opponent has real counterplay, especially their own chariots near your palace, it is often right to keep one chariot on a defensive file while the other attacks.
Why both chariots together are so strong
A single chariot can be blocked or chased. Two chariots cover two lines at once, defend each other, and can check the general alternately so it never gets a moment to regroup. Many mating attacks need exactly that: one chariot controls a rank or file while the other delivers check along another. That is why players work so hard in the opening to get both chariots out.
When one should stay home
If the opponent's chariot or cannon can reach your palace quickly, a chariot of yours on the file it needs, or on a rank in front of your palace, may be the only thing preventing mate. Sending it forward too wins nothing if your own general falls first. Count: how many moves does my attack need, and how many does theirs? If theirs is faster, defend first.
Flexible posts
A chariot does not have to choose permanently. A chariot on your own river bank, patrolling the river, or on a file beside your palace can defend now and swing into the attack in one move later. Posts like these keep both jobs open.
