Direct answer
Two chariots mate by taking one rank each. One chariot gives check along the rank the general stands on, and the other covers the rank it would step to. Because a chariot sweeps a whole line, two of them can cover every point a general has without any help.
The pattern
The chariot is the strongest piece on the board and two of them need no support at all. One takes the rank the general is on, the other takes the rank behind or in front. Between them there is nowhere left.

Why two chariots need nothing else
A general is confined to nine points. A chariot covers an entire rank of the palace in one move, which is three of those nine. Two chariots on neighbouring ranks cover six, and the general only ever has three ranks available. That is the whole arithmetic of the mate.
It also explains why trading a chariot when the opponent has two is nearly always right when your own general is exposed, and why keeping both of yours matters when theirs is.
Defending against it
You cannot stop two chariots by running, so the defence has to happen earlier:
- Trade one. A single chariot cannot mate a general that has any shelter at all. Trading chariots is the standard way out of the attack, even at the cost of a soldier or two.
- Keep an advisor on the back rank. A piece that blocks a rank breaks the second chariot's coverage and turns mate into a check.
- Block a file with anything. Chariots need open lines. Almost any piece in the way, even a soldier, costs the attacker a move to remove and gives you the move you need.

Trading the wrong chariot
As the defender, trade the chariot that is doing the attacking work, not the one that happens to be easiest to reach.

A checkmate delivered by two chariots working on neighbouring lines, one giving check and one covering the escape. The name refers to the two chariots crossing the general's position between them.
Can one chariot mate a lone general?
No. A single chariot can check endlessly but cannot cover both the general's rank and its escape points at the same time. It needs a second attacker, which may be another chariot, a horse, a cannon or a soldier.
Is the two chariot mate the same as a back rank mate in chess?
They rhyme. Both use a major piece on a line the king cannot leave. The difference is that a xiangqi general is confined to the palace all game, so the mating net is smaller and arrives faster.
