Draws, repetition and adjudication
Xiangqi does not draw by threefold repetition. It adjudicates, and the adjudication rules are the part of the game most descriptions get wrong.
Is perpetual check a draw in xiangqi? No. In xiangqi the player giving perpetual check must vary, and loses the game if they refuse. It is adjudicated, not drawn.
What is perpetual chase in xiangqi?Perpetual chase is repeatedly threatening to capture the same piece to force a repetition. Like perpetual check, the chaser must vary.
How do xiangqi games end in a draw?By agreement, by insufficient material, after sixty moves without a capture, or where both sides are equally at fault under the repetition laws.
What is the 110-diagram repetition casebook? It is the official collection of worked examples that settles how repetition positions are judged, and the reference our engine is tested against.
What happens if I repeat moves in xiangqi?Ordinary repetition where neither side is checking or chasing is a draw. If you are the one checking or chasing, you must vary or lose.
Can you agree a draw in xiangqi?Yes, exactly as in chess. Either player may offer and the other may accept, subject to any anti-draw rules the event applies.
Why does xiangqi have fewer draws than chess?Stalemate is a loss, perpetual check is a loss, and the confined general makes attacks convert. The defender simply has fewer resources.
What if neither side can make progress in xiangqi? The sixty-move rule ends it: sixty moves without a capture is a draw. Players usually agree one long before that.
Is it a draw if both sides have only their general left?Yes. With nothing but the two generals neither side can ever give check, so the position is a dead draw.
Do online xiangqi servers follow the real repetition rules? Many do not. Simplified repetition handling is common online, which is why the same position can be judged differently on different sites.
How do you save a lost position in xiangqi?Trade pieces, keep both advisors, and aim for a defence that cannot be broken. Perpetual check and stalemate will not save you.
Why does the checking player have to vary?Because the rules place responsibility for a repetition on the player forcing it. The checked player has no choice; the checker does.
Is a draw a good result in xiangqi? It depends entirely on the position and who you are. A draw against a stronger opponent from a worse position is a good result; one from a winning position is not.
Can you avoid a draw if you are winning in xiangqi?Usually yes, by declining offers, avoiding unnecessary repetition, and making sure you are not the one forced to vary under the perpetual check and chase rules.
What is a blocked position in xiangqi?A position where neither side can make progress because every attacking route is covered, most commonly a lone chariot facing an intact defence of advisors and elephants.
How do you know if material is insufficient to win in xiangqi?Check against the standard list: a lone horse or lone cannon cannot force mate, while a single chariot, or a minor piece paired with a soldier or advisor screen, can.
Is a draw by repetition the same as perpetual check in xiangqi? No. Ordinary repetition with neither side forcing it is a draw, while perpetual check specifically requires the checking player to vary or lose. They are different rules.
Can both players be checking each other at once in xiangqi? Not on the same move, since only one side moves at a time, but a game can feature both sides trading checks back and forth in a repeating sequence.
What should you do if your opponent keeps checking you in xiangqi?Answer each check correctly and recognise that the rules are on your side: the checking player must vary or lose, so you do not need to find an escape yourself.
Is chasing a piece always illegal to repeat in xiangqi? No. Only a genuine, real threat to capture counts as a chase under the rules. Repeating a position with no actual profitable capture available is not adjudicated the same way.
How do arbiters rule on repetition disputes in xiangqi?By comparing the recurring position against the event's repetition laws and the official casebook of worked examples, then deciding who, if anyone, was obligated to vary.
Can a draw happen before the sixty-move limit in xiangqi?Yes, easily. Agreement, insufficient material, and mutual perpetual situations can all produce a draw long before sixty moves without a capture have passed.
Why does chasing a protected piece not count as perpetual chase in xiangqi?Because the rule targets a genuine, profitable threat. If the piece being approached is adequately defended, capturing it would not actually gain material, so there is no real chase to adjudicate.
What is the difference between perpetual check and perpetual chase in xiangqi?Perpetual check repeatedly threatens the general; perpetual chase repeatedly threatens any other piece. Both require the forcing side to vary, under the same underlying principle.
