What is the difference between xiangqi and chess?Bigger board played on intersections, a confined general, a cannon that captures by jumping, no promotion or castling, and stalemate loses.
Is xiangqi harder than chess?Not harder, differently hard. Xiangqi is sharper and more tactical early; chess has deeper positional play and more theory to learn.
What is the difference between xiangqi and janggi?Janggi uses the same board but allows passing, has no river restriction on elephants, a different elephant move, and a general that uses the palace diagonals.
What is the difference between xiangqi and shogi?Shogi has drops — captured pieces return as your own — plus promotion and a 9×9 board of squares. Xiangqi has none of these and a cannon instead.
How is chaturanga different from xiangqi?Chaturanga is the older Indian game both descend from in part. It has no cannon, no river, no palace, and is played on squares.
Which xiangqi pieces match which chess pieces?The chariot is a rook exactly. The horse is a blockable knight. The rest have no clean equivalent, and there is no queen.
Is xiangqi more tactical than chess?Early on, yes. The confined general and cannon lines make positions sharper sooner, and there is no slow pawn-structure phase.
Can chess engines play xiangqi?Not directly. The rules, board and evaluation are different enough to need a dedicated engine, though the search techniques are shared.
Which is more popular, xiangqi or chess?By raw player numbers xiangqi is plausibly ahead, on the strength of China and Vietnam. Chess is far more global and far better funded.
Should I learn xiangqi or go?They are not similar games. Xiangqi is a concrete capture game with a clear goal; go is a territorial game with a much slower learning curve.
Does chess experience help at xiangqi?Yes, substantially — calculation and tactical vocabulary transfer directly. The cannon is the one thing that must be unlearned rather than learned.

Is the cannon stronger than a chess bishop?They are not comparable directly. The cannon needs a screen to capture and is usually valued above a horse, while a bishop is a pure long-range piece.

Is the xiangqi horse the same piece as a chess knight?Close, but not identical. Both move in an L-shape, but the horse can be blocked at the first step of its move, which the knight can never be.
Does material imbalance play out differently in xiangqi than in chess?Xiangqi has no queen to dominate an imbalance, and some lone pieces cannot force mate at all, which makes small material edges matter differently than in chess.
Do xiangqi and chess share any strategic ideas beyond tactics?Yes: development, king safety, controlling key lines and not moving the same piece twice are shared principles, even though the pieces that embody them differ.
Is a xiangqi rating comparable to a chess rating?No. Both use Elo-style systems, but the numbers are calibrated to different player pools and are not interchangeable, even between two xiangqi sites.
