Xiangqi rules questions
Is this move legal? These are the questions where the rules of xiangqi differ from every other chess-family game, which is where almost all the confusion lives.
Can the general leave the palace in xiangqi? No. The general is confined to the nine points of its palace for the entire game, and so are both advisors.
Can the two generals face each other in xiangqi? No. The flying general rule forbids the two generals from standing on the same file with nothing between them, and any move creating it is illegal.
Can a horse jump over pieces in xiangqi? No. The xiangqi horse never jumps. A piece on the point it steps through blocks the move entirely, which is the biggest difference from the chess knight.
Can the elephant cross the river in xiangqi? No. The elephant can never cross the river under any circumstances, which makes it a purely defensive piece with only seven reachable points.
Can a soldier move backwards in xiangqi? No. Soldiers never move backwards. Before the river they move only forward; after crossing they add sideways movement but still cannot retreat.
Is stalemate a draw in xiangqi? No. A player with no legal move loses in xiangqi. There is no stalemate draw, which makes material advantages convert far more reliably than in chess.
Can advisors leave the palace in xiangqi? No. Advisors are confined to the palace and move one point diagonally, reaching only five of its nine points.
Is there en passant in xiangqi? No. Soldiers move one point at a time with no double first step, so the situation en passant exists to correct never arises.
Can you pass your turn in xiangqi? No. You must make a legal move on your turn. A player with no legal move loses, since stalemate is a loss rather than a draw.
Can a cannon capture without a screen in xiangqi? No. A cannon captures only by jumping exactly one piece. With nothing in between, or two pieces in between, the capture is illegal.
Do you have to announce check in xiangqi? No. Announcing check is optional and is not done in serious play. Your opponent is responsible for noticing it.
Can the general capture pieces in xiangqi?Yes. The general captures any enemy piece on an adjacent point inside the palace, as long as the capture does not leave it in check.
Can horses enter the palace in xiangqi?Yes. Only the general and advisors are confined to the palace. Horses, chariots, cannons and soldiers may all enter it freely.
What happens if you make an illegal move in xiangqi? The move is taken back and a legal one played instead. In formal play repeated illegal moves are penalised and can forfeit the game.
Can you capture your own pieces in xiangqi? No. You may never capture your own pieces, and your own pieces block horses, elephants and chariots exactly as your opponent's do.
Which pieces does the river stop in xiangqi?Only the elephant is stopped by the river. Soldiers change behaviour on crossing; chariots, horses and cannons ignore it entirely.
Can a chariot move diagonally in xiangqi? No. The chariot moves any distance along a clear rank or file, exactly like a rook. There are no diagonal moves for it anywhere on the board.
How do you set up a xiangqi board?Chariots in the corners, then horses, elephants, advisors, general in the centre; cannons on the third rank; five soldiers on the fourth.
Can a cannon give check without a screen? No. Check is a threatened capture, and a cannon cannot capture without exactly one screen — so no screen means no check.
How many moves without a capture is a draw in xiangqi?Sixty moves without a capture is a draw in xiangqi — the equivalent of the fifty-move rule in chess.
Can a soldier give check in xiangqi?Yes. A soldier checks the general from directly in front of it, or from the side once it has crossed the river.
Are xiangqi rules the same everywhere? The movement rules are universal. Repetition adjudication and some tournament details differ between Chinese, WXF and Vietnamese practice.
Can the general move more than one point at a time? One point at a time, orthogonally, within the palace. There is no long move and no diagonal move for the general.
What material is not enough to win in xiangqi?A lone cannon cannot force mate against a bare general, because it needs a screen. Advisors and elephants alone, or a soldier already on the last rank, cannot either.
Does xiangqi use touch-move?Yes in formal play: touch a piece and you must move it if it has a legal move. Casual park games usually ignore the rule.
Can you checkmate with just a cannon in xiangqi? No. A lone cannon cannot even give check to a general in an empty palace, because there is nothing to jump over.
Do xiangqi pieces sit on the squares or on the lines? On the intersections. A xiangqi board has 90 playable points where its nine files and ten ranks cross.
Can two pieces occupy the same point in xiangqi? No. Every point holds at most one piece. Moving onto an enemy piece captures it; moving onto your own is illegal.
Must you get out of check immediately in xiangqi?Yes. You must answer a check on the very next move by capturing, blocking or moving the general. Any other move is illegal.
Does xiangqi have a fifty-move rule?Xiangqi has a sixty-move rule rather than fifty: sixty moves with no capture is a draw.
Can you take back a move in xiangqi? Not in formal play. Once a move is completed under touch-move it stands, and only illegal moves are corrected. Casual games take back moves by agreement.
Can you resign in xiangqi?Yes. Either player may resign at any time by declaring it, ending the game as a loss for them. It is standard etiquette once a position is clearly lost.
Is double check possible in xiangqi?Yes. A discovered attack can leave the general checked by two pieces at once, and usually the only answer is to move the general.
What happens when the clock runs out in xiangqi? The player who runs out of time loses immediately, provided the opponent has enough material to have any theoretical chance of mating.
Is the xiangqi board set up the same way for both players?Yes. Red and Black set up in mirrored fashion on their own back three ranks, with identical piece counts and identical relative positions.
Can a cannon capture the general in xiangqi? In principle yes, exactly like any other piece, but in practice the game ends at checkmate before a capture of the general ever actually happens.
Can an advisor capture an enemy piece in xiangqi?Yes. An advisor captures exactly as it moves, one point diagonally, and only within the palace, so it can only take pieces that have ventured inside.
Can two of your own pieces be on the same file in xiangqi?Yes, any number of your own pieces can share a file or rank. The only restriction is that no two pieces of either side can share a single point.
Is a discovered check legal in xiangqi?Yes, completely legal, and extremely common. Moving a piece to unmask an attack from another piece behind it is one of the most ordinary ways to give check.
Can a piece be immune from capture in xiangqi? No. Every piece, including the general, can be captured if an opponent's piece can legally reach it. There is no special protection for any piece type.
When is a move considered complete in xiangqi? In formal play, a move is complete when the piece is released on its new point. Online, a move is complete the instant it is submitted to the server.
Can you forfeit a xiangqi game by arriving late?Yes, in tournament play. Most events set a default time; a player who has not arrived by then forfeits the game, exactly as in chess.
How do players decide who plays red in xiangqi?By agreement, coin toss, or tournament pairing rules. Red moves first, so the choice matters, and formal events assign colours rather than leaving it to the players.
Is capturing mandatory in xiangqi? No. You may decline any capture that is not forced by check. Unlike draughts, xiangqi never requires you to take a piece just because you can.
What happens if a piece is accidentally displaced in xiangqi? It is restored to its correct point and play continues. A displaced piece is not a move, and no legal-move consequence follows from a bump or a knock.
Can you move twice in a row in xiangqi? No. Turns strictly alternate between red and black with no exceptions, no extra moves, and no way to skip an opponent's turn.
Can a soldier capture another soldier in xiangqi?Yes. A soldier captures any enemy piece, including an enemy soldier, on a point it can legally move to: straight ahead, or sideways once across the river.
Must you capture the strongest piece available in xiangqi? No. There is no rule requiring you to capture any particular piece, or the most valuable one on offer. Every capture is entirely optional and chosen freely.
Can you win by forcing stalemate on your opponent in xiangqi?Yes. Because stalemate is a loss rather than a draw, deliberately leaving your opponent with no legal move is a legitimate and sometimes decisive winning technique.
Can you play xiangqi with a handicap in xiangqi?Yes. Handicap games between mismatched players are a long-standing tradition, usually removing a piece such as a horse or chariot from the stronger side rather than changing any rule.
Can a pinned piece give check in xiangqi?Only along the pin line. A move that takes a pinned piece off its line is illegal even if it gives check; a pinned chariot, cannon or soldier may still slide along it.
Can you decline a draw offer in xiangqi?Yes. A draw offer only becomes a draw if both players accept it. Either side may decline and simply continue playing, exactly as with a chess draw offer.
Can a soldier capture diagonally in xiangqi? No. A soldier captures exactly the way it moves, straight ahead, or sideways once it has crossed the river, and never diagonally.
Can an elephant capture a piece two points diagonally away?Yes, provided the midpoint of that diagonal, the elephant's eye, is empty. A piece on the eye blocks the capture along with everything else on that diagonal.
Can your own piece ever put you in check in xiangqi? No. Check is always given by an enemy piece. Your own pieces can only expose you to one, by moving out of the way or by becoming an enemy cannon's screen.
Is a move illegal because of a future threat, or only an immediate one?Only an immediate one. Legality is tested against the position right after the move, whether your own general is in check, not against anything that might happen later.
Can you be forced to make a losing move in xiangqi?Yes. If every legal move you have makes your position worse, you must still play one of them, since xiangqi has real zugzwang and no rule lets you decline to move.
Do you need to keep a scoresheet in tournament xiangqi?Usually, yes, in formal over-the-board events, following the organiser's regulations. It also settles disputes about repetition, illegal moves and displaced pieces.
What happens if a player leaves the board during a xiangqi game? The clock keeps running against them. A player who does not return in time forfeits on time, the same as running out of time by any other means.
Can you offer a draw while in check in xiangqi?Yes, offering itself is always legal, but if the offer is declined you must still answer the check with your very next move.
Can escaping one check accidentally create a new illegal position?Yes. A general fleeing an attack can step onto a point that violates the flying general rule, and that particular escape is simply not a legal option.
Is repeating a position twice enough to trigger a draw claim in xiangqi? No. Xiangqi has no fixed repetition count like chess's threefold rule. What matters is the pattern of who is checking or chasing, judged over as many repeats as it takes to be clear.
Can a move that delivers checkmate still be illegal if it exposes your own general?Yes. A move that leaves your own general in check is illegal no matter what it achieves elsewhere, including delivering checkmate to the opponent.
Does a soldier block the flying-general rule the same as any other piece?Yes. Any single piece on the central file between the two generals blocks the flying-general rule, including a soldier, regardless of its low value.
Can an advisor ever block the flying-general file, since it never leaves the palace?Yes, when it stands on the palace's central point. That single point sits on the central file, so an advisor there blocks the flying-general rule like any other piece.
Can a general legally move into a check that isn't obvious, a hidden discovered check? No. A destination square is illegal if anything attacks it, including an attack only revealed by the general's own move, so a hidden discovered check rules that square out too.
Can a completely pinned piece still give check to the enemy general?Yes. A piece frozen in place by a pin can still be giving check, because check only asks what a piece attacks, not whether that piece has any legal move of its own.
Can two of your own pieces be pinned to your general at the same time?Yes. Nothing limits a player to one pin at a time, and it is common to have one piece pinned on the flying-general file while another is separately pinned to a chariot or cannon elsewhere.
Can you block a check by capturing a piece sitting on the blocking square? No, because it never comes up. A chariot's line and a horse's leg point are empty whenever they check, and capturing a cannon's screen just leaves a new screen.
Does the flying-general rule apply to any pieces besides the two generals? No. The flying-general rule is specific to the two generals facing each other on a clear file. No equivalent restriction exists for any other pair of pieces in xiangqi.
Which xiangqi pieces can jump over other pieces?Only the cannon jumps, and only when capturing, over exactly one piece. The horse and elephant look like jumpers but are blocked.
How many moves does it take a soldier to cross the river? Two. A soldier starts one rank short of its river bank, so its first step reaches the bank and its second crosses. Only then can it move sideways.
Can the elephant enter the palace in xiangqi? One of the elephant's seven points is the middle of the palace's front edge. An elephant there is common, and it can get in its own general's way.
